What's Denim Got to Do with It
by: Brittany Williams
He picked her up from her house for her first driving lesson. Eager to learn how to drive, she would have never guessed what was about to happen to her. He took her to an isolated road and pulled her out of the car. She said, "No," but that did not stop him. Her jeans were tight, but that did not stop him. He raped her! She told her parents what happened, and they immediately reported him to the authorities. He was arrested and convicted. Later, he appealed his conviction. The court ruled that because she was wearing tight jeans, she must have helped him remove the jeans, thus making it consensual sex. She did not consent. He raped her! She did not consent; she did what she needed to do to survive. She survived!
And today we wear denim.
We wear denim because it is comfortable, not because we consent to being raped.
We wear denim because it goes with everything, not because we consent to being catcalled.
We wear denim because it is stylish, not because we consent to being groped.
We wear denim because it makes us confident, not because we want to be objectified.
